What I am working on at the moment
I am responsible for the future development of The Young Foundation’s work. Right now I am focusing on building the excellence of our research and innovations to tackle the root causes of inequality. Most relevant is our Places Programme where our starting point is that traditional approaches to growth and regeneration have failed to benefit all parts of society, and we want to turn the tide of rising inequality using the assets of places and communities. Our Places work seeks to stimulate urban growth and regeneration through ethnographic research and movement-based social innovation for the benefit of everyone.
Why I wanted to join the Participatory City Global Advisory
I have followed and admired the approach taken by Participatory City, which I believe is completely complementary to the movement building work that is fundamental to our Places programme.
A little bit about my background
I come from a large and noisy working class family in Bradford, Yorkshire, I have always been a combination of community and political interventionist, activist and leader. This has led to an interesting life including establishing organisations to effect change for social businesses, running the Fabian Society, working on estate development for the Co-operative and being Project Director for the sociologist Michael Young. I have been blessed.
